Data Viz Fall 2017 Blog

A place to document all my work during my time at IDM.

Good Viz / Bad Viz

This week, we were tasked to find one good visualization and one bad visualization. I think that this visualization, created by Max Galka that visualizes the flow of global goods on an international level, is an example of a good visualization.

The visualization uses colors to clearly differentiate the different goods that countries are importing and exporting. The interactive element allows people to choose which country they want to view data for. You can also zoom in and out to look at countries or certain geographical areas much more closely. I think this viz could be improved though. I think some colors could be more unique as they are too similar. The colors between land and sea could also be improved to provide better contrast.

This next viz was found on a site that was filled with bad visualizations. I think it is supposed to represent how elements of internet marketing connect and play off of each other. However, the way that this was designed does a poor job of that.

In my opinion, this is a bad visualization as I don't know where to start, what should be connecting to what, and the overall purpose of the visualization. Although it may not be displaying data, this is just a bad way to organize information in general. It seems that there's actually a whole branch that is not connected to anything at all except for each other. In general, this just seems really poorly thought out. It's a good example of what NOT to do.
